This a question that often comes up when I’m doing the By Me Journey coaching calls – what is the difference between the resume and the cover letter?
The goal of the Cover Letter is to sell them on meeting you in person so you can demonstrate how you can help them win.
The goal of the Resume is to sell them on how your experience and skills enable you to deliver the results that you promised on your Cover Letter.
Sometimes people even wonder if why they should even bother to write a cover letter.
Here’s some good reasons for you to do your best work on your cover letter:

My biggest turn-off to candidates applying for a job- a generic cover letter. My advice- personalize one or don’t send one.

When applying for a job, please do yourself a favour & actually write a cover letter. A good one at that. Currently going through intern applications and it’s so disappointing to see brilliant & qualified candidates get tossed aside because they didn’t take the time to do so

The Quickest and Simplest Ways to Improve Your Cover Letter and Resume
On your Cover Letter be specific about why you are interested in the opportunity, why they should care and how will you be able to help them.
Also, be sure to add a strong call to action at the end of your Cover Letter so you can inspire the decision-maker to take action and actually want to meet you immediately.
On your Resume, be sure to focus on your achievements and the problems that you solved that the potential hiring company would be also interested in.
Another thing that I don’t see people doing often enough is to add testimonials or recommendations from people who are praising your work.
Besides that, I would make sure to NOT add a link to LinkedIn because that could potentially distract the decision-maker with other potential hires.
I can help you do this!
But to be honest having a great Resume and highly persuasive Cover Letter is NOT enough!
You need to have total clarity on:
- What skills do you have that makes you standout a.k.a. your super-powers
- Who can you help the most (and benefit the most) from your work
- How to get their attention
- How to demonstrate that you can help them
- How to make an irresistible offer
- How to close the deal
Besides the video training, I also coach and train highly ambitious professionals on how they can sell their skills by executing each step. If this feels right to you then let’s have a call and get started now!
